Water power on display at full KRS, visitors flock to dam
Mysuru: With incessant rainfall in the Cauvery catchment area, all the dams in the river basin including KRS, Kabini, Harangi and Hemavathi dams continued to receive heavy inflow on Sunday.
With the reservoirs reaching their full reservoir levels (FRL) in record time, there is heavy discharge of water from them into the rivers. For instance, the KRS dam opened 30 crest gates and released a massive 65,000 cusecs into the Cauvery river leading to Tamil Nadu, Kabini too released 40,416 cusecs into the river on Sunday.
With a total of 1,05,416 cusecs of water flowing into the river leading to Tamil Nadu, the waterfalls at Gagana Chukki and Bhara Chukki were a sight to behold. A huge number of tourists are flocking to the waterfalls in the Cauvery basin and also lining up near the reservoirs to see the water cascading out from the crest gates.
The Hemavathi reservoir released 28,800 cusecs and Harangi reservoir released 13,000 cusecs on Sunday into the canal leading to KRS dam. The KRS dam received as much as 43,654 cusecs with its level touching 123.42 feet as against its capacity of 124.80 feet on Sunday. The water level at KRS on the same day in the previous year was 78.35 feet. It also released 2,611 cusecs into the canal for irrigation.
With good rains in Wyanad in Kerala, the Kabini dam received 40,002 cusecs, and the water level on Sunday was 2281.27 feet as against its capacity of 2284 feet.
At Hemavathi, the water level on Sunday touched 2920.15 feet as against its capacity of 2922 feet. The inflow was 32,000 cusecs. Hemavathi has released 3,200 cusecs into the river too. Last year on the same day the water level was 2874.18 feet. The level in Harangi reservoir stood at 2,857 feet as against its capacity of 2,859 feet on Sunday. It received an inflow of 14,000cusecs. Kabini reservoir had filled up as early as June 15 while Harangi filled up on July 7 and KRS and Hemavathi on July 14.
