Minor tremors in Banjara Hills

I heard a loud noise. Later, the news of earthquake broke out, said Sailesh Sharma, a resident of Jubilee Hills.

Hyderabad: Minor earthquakes, measuring 0.3 — 0.5 on the Richter’s scale, were reported in parts of Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills (close to KBR Park) and Road No. 45 at 8.30 am on Wednesday. However, no properties were damaged.

“I heard a loud noise. Later, the news of earthquake broke out,” said Sailesh Sharma, a resident of Jubilee Hills.

Durgam Cheruvu, Madhapur, recorded tectonic tremors of 1.1 magnitude on Tuesday, said National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI). This is the second time tremors are reported after 120 micro earthquakes were reported in Borabanda in October this year. Experts said that the city is witnessing a spate of seismic activity which will continue till December.

Today’s earthquake was recorded by five seismic stations and was below 0.6 magnitude on the Richter’s scale. The tremor at Durgam Cheruvu was felt by employees of J.P. Morgan Corporate Company. The micro earthquakes are the result of the hydroseismicity, a condition where variation in rainfalls can trigger earthquakes.

Seismic activity to continue till December
Dr Srinagesh Davuluri, head of seismology observatory at NGRI, said, “These microtremors come along with sound. The magnitude is less and buildings can withstand these tremors. It is observed that the areas which received 50 per cent excess rainfall witnessed these tectonic tremors due to rise in groundwater level. Rains in October can be a reason for these tremors and the condition can continue for a few more weeks.”
