Kozhikode: Cops start zero hours' today

Police to create awareness among motorists.

Kozhikode: Accidents and traffic violators are on the rise alarmingly in the city and Raising awareness among motorists is the primary concern of the city police now.

In this attempt, the city police under the direction of the new commissioner Sanjay Kumar Gurudin has announced 'zero hours' from Thursday.

Mr Gurudin said city police would identify one hour every day, which will be known as zero-hour, intensely monitoring and checking traffic violations. No violator caught will face a penalty during the hour but 'punished' to attend their traffic awareness classes.

"Traffic management includes engineering, education and enforcement," he said.

"Mere enforcement cannot solve the issues unless all these blends perfectly and we are trying to touch all these three areas."

The 'zero-hour' will keep changing daily, and the control room will inform timings to all police stations and traffic units well in advance to ensure law enforcers are present on the road.

"It's only for awareness, and hence no inconvenience will be created for others. It will focus on traffic rules and regulations and not document verification."

Victims of accidents or their family members would be invited to share their experiences so that the drivers can see for themselves the depth of their tragedies.

The nodal officer for the initiative is the ACP traffic North.

The project was earlier implemented in Kannur district successfully when Mr Guridun was the district police chief there.
