Helmet Awareness: Salem women students create world record
SALEM: As many as 4,050 women college students here created a unique world record on Saturday by forming the largest "helmet-like formation" as on date to drive home the message that all women two-wheeler riders should necessarily wear helmets in the interest of safety.
The India representative of the 'Asian Book of Records', Mr. Satheesh, was at the huge, impressive function to raise awareness among the people on the compulsory wearing of helmets, organised on the sprawling grounds of a private women's Arts college opposite the Periyar University (PU) campus here. The Salem police commissioner, the affable K Shankar, and the PU vice-chancellor, P. Kuzhanthaivelu, participated as special guests on the occasion.
Congratulating the organisers of the function to create this unique world record, Mr Shankar said through such awareness campaigns in sufficient numbers among the people at large, the road accident rate could be significantly brought down. In Salem district itself, fatalities in road accidents had come down by 40 per cent in 2018, compared to the year 2017, he said.
Urging the women students to necessarily wear helmets when they ride two-wheelers, Mr Shankar also appealed to them to take this message to other members in their respective families in the interests of road safety and protecting precious human lives.
