Madras High Court quashes weightage marks for medicos
Chennai: The Madras high court on Friday quashed a government order allowing the state government to grant weightage marks to those who worked in Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in rural areas and government hospitals / PHCs / Government Medical Colleges in Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Ramanathapuram districts for admissi-on to PG Medical Degree / Diploma courses for the academic year 2017-18.
Pointing out that the state government has not formulated any criteria for identifying the areas and the PHCs in rural areas and government hospital and government medical college and hospital in TNR districts were not included in the prospectus, the bench quashed the G.O and directed the state government to reconfigure the merit list within 3 days and act accordingly.
State to appeal against High Court order
To encourage the services of doctors in rural areas and to encourage the doctors who have served the rural public in remote areas, the state government would go an appeal against the Madras High Court and plead in the Supreme Court, health secretary J Radhakrishnan told Deccan Chronicle.
The court has struck down the merit list prepared by the state which has been prepared based on the Medical Council of India (MCI) guidelines and the state's policy to improve rural health, the state is examining the Madras high court's order and is in consultation with the legal experts on next mode of action.
