Krishnagiri: People vacate houses to protect their farmlands

The land survey has been stopped for the second time in a week.

Krishnagiri: Tension prevailed in Kudimenehalli village, near Poochampalli of Krishnagiri district after the police and the revenue officials came to the village for the second time to take over tracts of private lands.

Over 300 policemen have been deployed on Saturday in Kudimenehalli village as a preventive measure due to the plan of the revenue department officials to survey private properties selected for erecting the high voltage direct transmission tower (HVDCT).

Then, the police force was withdrawn from Kudimenehalli village after the revenue officials changed their mind not to go ahead with their work for reasons unknown as yet.

“Village looked like a riot affected place because of the police force sent to our Kudimenehalli in support of the revenue officials taking over our lands,” 47 years old farmer C. Madhan told DC.

He added, “any such move will force us to end our lives if the government was stubborn in erecting towers on our lands without minding about the livelihood of 100 farmers in Kudimenahalli and Devirihalli villages.”

According to Madhan, people have vacated the houses and stay in the farm lands in apprehension that the officials may return and take over their property which is the only source of income for them.

The land survey has been stopped for the second time in a week. Earlier, around three people of a family threatened the officials to commit suicide if their property was surveyed for the taking over the land for the 800-KV Raigarh-Pugalur HVDC bi-pole link.

The project is jointly implemented in Tamil Nadu by the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited, and the Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation Limited. This project is to be implemented at the cost of ' 14,416.51 crore, covers a distance of 1749.775 kilo meters from Raigarh in Chhattisgarh to Pugalur in Tamil Nadu.
