Salem: 32 students, teachers hurt as bus topples
Salem: A fun trip to Kerala ended in tragedy as around 32 students including teachers of a private engineering college in Chennai suffered serious injuries after the bus they were returning toppled on the ‘Butterfly flyover’ at Kondalampatty in Salem district on Wednesday.
Around 150 students, studying final year BE Mechanical at a private engineering college near Vandaloor in Chennai had gone on a trip to Kerala in three buses.
As they were returning, one of the buses toppled while negotiating a curve at the flyover around 6.30 am.
On receiving information, the Annadanapatty police rushed to the spot and sent 15 persons to Salem Government Hospital and another 17 persons to a private hospital in Kondalampatty. Police said the bus driver Gnanasekar, 47, and Janaki, 22, a student suffered fractures and were admitted to the ICU of a private hospital.
Traffic was affected on the stretch for over one hourdue to the accident. The Annadanapatty police have registered a case and further investigations are on.
