Thiruvananthapuram: New panel on mullaperiyar

The team comprises representatives of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Thiruvananthapuram: A special committee headed by National Water Commission was formed to monitor situation in Mullaperiyar dam. The team comprises representatives of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

The Cabinet Secretary constituted a committee chaired by chairman, Central Water Commission and Engineers-in-Chief of Tamil Nadu and Kerala for proper reservoir management in Mullaperiyar Dam.

The decision comes in the wake of Kerala’s request to Tamil Nadu not to allow the water to reach beyond 142 ft in the wake of water level rising in Cheruthoni reservoir of Idukki dam.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has said Mullaperiyar dam is safe and there was no need to reduce the water level at this stage. He said this in response to a letter sent by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan regarding the opening of dam shutters after the water level touches 142 ft.
