Kozhikode: Private medical colleges put up a poor show

Several self-financing medical colleges in the state have recorded poor pass percentages.

Kozhikode: Several self-financing medical colleges in the state have recorded poor pass percentages in the first year examination for MBBS course conducted by Kerala University of Health Sciences in 2016 while most government and private medical colleges which adhered to merit in their admissions recorded a pass percentage of more than 90 per cent.

Topping the list is Jubilee Mission Medical College and Research Institute, Thrissur, which recorded a pass percentage of 96. The other toppers are Government Medical College, Manjeri (95.96), Government TD Medical College, Alappuzha (95.3), Government Medical College, Idukki (94), Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram (93.47). Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church Medical College, Kolenchery (92), Government Medical College, Kozhikode (91.9), Government Medical College, Kottayam (91.84) and Academy of Medical Sciences, Pariyaram (90). The university, which published the results on November 10, has withheld the results of all students from Malabar Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Kozhikode, Mount Zion Medical College Hospital, Pathanamthitta, and Al Azhar Medical College and Superspecialty Hospital, Ezhalloor, Thodupuzha as they are being ‘re-totalled’ for publication. The officials, however, confirmed that 92 of the 145 students who appeared for the examination from Malabar Medical College failed. The results of 85 students from Karuna Medical College, Palakkad, and 127 students in Kannur Medical College, Kannur, have also been withheld. Among the other poor performers were Azeeezia Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Kollam (45.16), KMCT Medical College, Kozhikode (57.73) and Sree Gokulam Medical College and Research Foundation, Thiruvananthapuram (65.54).

The management of the Malabar Medical College blamed the ‘stress’ put by the university regarding the legal registration of the courses for the failure of the students. “The students were in constant fear of derailing their studies due to the unnecessary pressure they faced at the eleventh hour,” the college said.
