Andhra Pradesh: Construction of agriculture varsity sought
Guntur: Activists of the CPI, AP Rythu Sangham and other Communist organisations alleged that despite having funds, the state government was being negligent with regard to construction of buildings in AP Agriculture University and staged a protest at Lam Farm near Guntur on Thursday.
CPI state assistant secretary M. Nageswara Rao reminded that two years passed since the foundation for the university was laid in 510 acres allotted at Lam Farm. There has been no progress in the works so far, he said and added that weeds were growing abundantly in the open space as construction work has not been taken up.
The Union government sanctioned Rs 135 crore for the construction works but only Rs 16 crore was spent in the last two years, reflecting the slow pace of progress in works. Ridiculing the negligence of the state government, Mr Rao said neither will crops grow out of computers nor will agriculture summit by Bill Gates help in growing crops.
The protesters sought sanctioning of 500 acres for agriculture research in Amaravati. He urged the CM to announce sanctioning of land for agriculture research in the winter Assembly session. CPI district secretary J. Ajay Kumar, APRS district secretary M. Ramesh Babu and other leaders lamented that only the foundation stone is there in Lam Farm. They submitted a memorandum to university registrar T.V. Satyanarayana.
