Karnataka: Woman gives birth in autorickshaw
Mysuru: With government hospitals in Mysuru, Mandya and Chamarajnagar districts seeing a heavy rush of patients owing to the ongoing strike by private hospitals, a woman delivered her baby in an autorickshaw in front of the Mandya Institute of Medical Science hospital even as her husband stood in the winding queue to admit her to it on Thursday.
With the hospital flooded with people, the wait proved too long for the woman, Savitha , who went into labour and delivered the baby boy in the auto she was in while her husband, Ravi, stood in the queue. The couple live in My Sugar Town of Mandya.
The hospital staff later rushed both mother and child from the auto to the ward, where they are said to be doing well. MIMs, which usually sees an average of 15 deliveries a day, handled as many as 20 on Thursday.
Government hospitals in Chamarajnagar too were flooded with patients as its 122 private hospitals and clinics remained shut. The Chamarajnagar district hospital saw patients lying on the floor while they waited in the long queue to see doctors in the absence of an adequate number of chairs.
With 1800 private hospitals and clinics remaining shut in Mysuru district, its 164 government hospitals and the Mysuru Medical College hospital were also besieged by patients on Thursday. KR Hospital handled as many as 1642 OPD cases and 122 admissions, including emergencies.
