Bengaluru: Seized silencers now pitch for safe driving

Kumaraswamy Layout police use them as signages urging motorists to observe traffic rules.

Bengaluru: Tapping their creative instincts Bengaluru traffic police have turned confiscated and defective silencers to promote safe driving.

These silencers have been recycled into signage and boards with messages urging motorists to follow traffic rules.

The city traffic police have been conducting drives against defective and modified silencers, and booked 8,256 cases in the city till Oct 31 this year, whereas in 2017 they had booked 5,053 cases.

The action was taken following several complaints about nuisance caused by altered silencers.

To fight noise and air pollution, Adugodi traffic police had earlier used road rollers to crush the seized silencers.

However this time, the Kumaraswamy Layout traffic police have recycled these confiscated silencers and turned them into a attractive sign boards to convey road safety messages.

Kumarswamy Layout traffic police inspector B.P. Nagaraj and team had seized 188 defective silencers. The team recycled these silencers into signages and put them on the NICE Road, Kanakapura junction and near KSIT college on Kanakapura road.

Inspector Nagaraj said that so far they used 140 silencers to build two signage boards and the first one was installed on the national highway bridge 15 days ago while the second one was installed on Thursday.

He said that they are planning to install more such boards in their jurisdiction and will soon be installing another one in front of their station.

As per the rules, the vehicles modified to create louder noise are now being booked under Section 190 (2) of Motor Vehicle Act. The

punishment is a court-prescribed fine along with forfeiture of equipment.

The fine was recently raised to Rs 2,000, whereas earlier erring motorists need to pay only Rs 100 and could continue using the vehicle with the modified silencers.
