Hyderabad: Bar & restaurant near school closed

A resident of the same colony said, The management has lured the residents by giving jobs and employment opportunities in the bar.

Hyderabad: A bar and restaurant which has set up shop in Nandanavanam colony, Karmanghat, Saroornagar, is reportedly less that 20 metres from a school. There has been a huge uproar by the residents of the colony, objecting to the bar and they have also complained about it to the excise department.

The bar cum restaurant was set up in front of the government primary school in Nandanavanam colony. Since the residents objected, the management postponed their plan to open the bar one year ago. However, on this Children’s’ Day they opened the bar near the school.

The bar was less than 20 metres from the school violating the Supreme Court’s rule of a minimum 100 metres distance should be there from schools and there shouldn’t be any liquor outlets nearby. A resident of the same colony said, “The management has lured the residents by giving jobs and employment opportunities in the bar. There was a bus stop in front of the school. The commuters who wait at the bus stop have been facing a lot of problems. There are around 300-400 students in the school. It was the only government school in the surrounding areas. There was a temple behind the place where the bar is. It is a residential colony. Especially, during the night drunkards are creating a nuisance on the road.”

District Prohibition Excise Officer, Saroornagar, K Raghuram said, “There has been no rule violation. The distance between the bar and school was 130 metres. As per the apex court norms, the distance should be a min of 100 metres.
