Foreign students prefer universities in Karnataka, says report
Bengaluru: Karnataka remains the first choice of foreign students arriving for their higher education in the country, according to the report on the Annual Status of Higher Education of States and Union Territories in India (ASHE 2016) prepared by Deloitte and the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII).
While there are an estimated 42,293 foreign students studying in India, Karnataka has the biggest chunk of them, 13,956, among the states, the report reveals. In fact one out of every three foreign students studying in the country is enrolled in its colleges, it says.
Interestingly, the report has found the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in higher education overall is higher among males (25.3) than among females (23.2) and significant gender disparity in enrolment for Ph.Ds. and PG Diploma courses with females accounting for 40.7 per cent of the total enrolments fo Ph.Ds. and 46.1 per cent of total enrolments in PG Diploma course. However, the phenomenon is reversed at the M.Phil level, with females accounting for 57.7 per cent of total enrolments.
The GER of scheduled caste students (19.1) and scheduled tribe students (13.7) is lower than the average national GER of 24.3. Also, females are significantly under-represented among the faculty and staff in higher education institutes as compared to males, the report adds.
