Hyderabad turns street art hub
Hyderabad: Hyderabad has emerged as the street art capital of South India and is among five metro cities with the largest amount of curated street art. At Necklace Road, art, covers around 50,000 square feet and also below the Madhapur flyover about a kilometre.
Street art can be spotted at Gachibowli, Madhapur, Necklace Road, CM’s Camp Office and soon at Ayyappa junction underpass. Art is usually restricted to exhibitions but in the last five years, the city has seen a surge in street art. Local artists as well as some international artists and students of art colleges have been leaving their mark on public walls and even private houses (with permission). Hyderabad hosted the Street Art festival for two consecutive years. Some street art is commissioned but some is just a spontaneous expression of the artist.
Giulia Ambrogi, co-founder and curator of Start India, says that Hyderabad has ‘embraced contemporary street art’ and “its corridors now wear contemporary street art. Hyderabad has truly emerged, breaking away from conventional spaces.”
“With the development of B.S. Maktha, street art has changed the dynamics of the area. Necklace Road will serve as an art district eventually. “In the next five years city will overtake other metro cities in this aspect,” adds Mr Prshant K. Lahoti, founder of Kalakriti Art Gallery. GHMC commissioner Dr Janardhan Reddy says, more public spaces will be allotted to artists to sketch their ideas.
