Chaotic Mehdipatnam to get subway in PPP mode
Hyderabad: The subway concept has been failing in the city but the notorious Mehidipatnam stretch could finally get one if the GHMC’s plans reach fruition.
The civic body has taken up work on a subway after it was found that a pedestrian skywalk was not feasible due to the PVNR expressway.
It’s hoped the new subway will make life easier for the thousands of office-goers who face a tough time crossing the congested Mehdipatnam road – which also accommodates colleges, bus-stops and bazaars. Motorists are also not willing to halt even for a second to allow pedestrian crossing.
“Which is why the idea of a subway was proposed — to avoid accidents and to ensure a smooth flow of traffic,” Jafar Hussain, AIMIM MLA, said. “It took a lot of convincing and the HMDA finally gave its nod because the PVNR is maintained by them. We are planning to maintain this project using the public-private partnership (PPP) model. Tenders will be called soon,” Ashwini Kumar, superintendent engineer of the GHMC, said.
Mr Ravinder Reddy, an orthopedic surgeon and a resident of Guddimalkapur said: “It takes almost 30 minutes during peak hours from NMDC to the inner ring road. The traffic congestion is primarily because of uncontrolled pedestrian traffic.”
