AI to be used in defence forces
Hyderabad: Artificial Intelligence is to be used in detecting human intrusion on our borders and in constructing new road maps for the armed forces. The DRDO’s Centre for AI and Robotics has developed an AI-based solution for signal intelligence to enhance intelligence collation and analysis capabilities of the armed forces.
“The Ministry of Defence is preparing its forces to use Artificial Intelligence. To study the whole gamut of issues on the implications of AI on national security and defence needs, a multi-stakeholder Task Force has been constituted. The Task Force has studied research and innovation in AI and outlined its adoption in the defence sector including future roadmap on how to integrate and embed AI strategy with core defence strategy,” said a senior officer with MOD.
The Defence Public Sector has undertaken two projects for developing AI enabled products. One project has been sanctioned to DRDO, to develop AI based solutions for signal intelligence. The project costing '73.9 crore will enhance intelligence collation and analysis capabilities of the armed forces. The second project is Energy Harvesting Based Infrared Sensor Network for Automated Human Intrusion Detection (EYESIRa).
“Artificial Intelligence based tools will aid the defence forces constructively in areas such as decision support, sensor data analysis, predictive maintenance, situational awareness, accurate data extraction, security etc. These tools will assist defence personnel in better operations, maintenance and logistics support,” added the officer.
The Government is expecting more use of Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things in the fields of Automation, Aero Space, Defence and Military operations.
According to experts in the Defence intelligence wing, Artificial Intelli-gence and Internet of Things play a crucial role in development and deployment of auton-omous weapons, intruders detection, situation analysis, counter measures, face recognition and pattern analyses which will help military operations.
In the aerospace industry, AI can help in fleet management as well.
