Kochi: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday inaugurated the Kochi Metro Police Station near the Cusat metro station at Kalamassery.
The inauguration of the 2500 square feet building renovated in 2017 was getting delayed inordinately for more than one year.
The station will exclusively deal with the crimes on the rapid transit system.
He unveiled a plaque and signed in the visitor's register at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
Kochi Metro Rail managing director A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish handed over its key to state police chief Loknath Behera.
Mr Vijayan said that metro special police would protect the passengers and to prevent any untoward incidents on the metro.
“The station has jurisdiction over the metro corridor and the coach repair yard at Muttom," he said.
The police station has been set up exclusively to maintain law and order on the metro rail stretch between Aluva and Pettah now. Earlier, police stations in the respective areas were handling any offence or crime reported inside metro trains and stations.
He also inaugurated five police stations – Elavumthitta in Pathan-amthitta, Udumbanch-ola in Idukki, Pantheer-ankavu in Kozhikode, Kannanalloor in Kollam, Melparamba in Kasargod, and two lower subordinate quarters in Thiruvananthapuram Rural and Kenichira in Wayanad - and a DNA laboratory in Kannur.
V. K. Ibrahim Kunju MLA presided over the function. M. Swaraj MLA, Kalamassery mu-nicipal chair Rukhiya Jamal, Ernakulam Range IG Vijay Sakhare, Kochi city police commissioner K. P. Philip, Aluva municipal chair Lissy Abraham, and Choornikkara Panchay-at president A. P. Udayakumar attended the event.
