Cycling should be part of fitness'
Chennai: On the eve of the World Heritage Day, Cycling Yogis, a non-profit organisation, comprising people from various walks of life with a common passion for cycling and respecting heritage, organised a World Heritage Day Ride.
The ride, which started from Probikers (Bicycle Shop) in OMR early Sunday finished at Seafarers Club next to Madras Port Trust Administrative office in Rajaji Salai. Around 85 cyclists, including men and women from different age groups, participated in the ride. The highlight was that another group of 20 school children with staff support from KRM Public School joined the cyclists at Seafarers Club from Perambur.
The 4th anniversary celebration of the group was held at Seafarers Club (Ministry of Shipping), during which a special edition stamp of veteran bicycle dealer in Chennai since ’70s, B Balasundaram, was released by chief guest Enarasu Karunesan (CEO Adani Ports India). The program also included presentation of Cycling Yogis activities during 2015-2016 and distribution of momentos.
To commemorate the World Heritage Day, a Heritage Visit was organised to Madras High Court. The Madras High Court heritage walk was conducted by N.L. Rajah, a senior advocate and member of the Madras High Court Heritage Committee. The heritage walk inside the court campus traced the history of eminent personalities in the High Court, touched upon the marvelous architecture of the historic building and uniqueness of the High Court building from other places in India.
After completion of the heritage walk a Swatch Bharath pledge was taken by cyclists and school students at the ASI property Tomb of David Yale and Joseph Hymners, located in the Law College compound.
“It was yet another opportunity for us to create awareness of our glorious heritage during this special occasion. It also provides an opportunity to travel without burning the fossil fuel thereby creating a healthy lifestyle and green environment,” said Sundar Rajan, a cyclist.
