Madhuranagar: Old colony has amenities
Visakhapatnam: A walk down the Dwarakanagar Colony towards the national highway leads one to Madhuranagar - a five-decade-old colony situated next to the busy stretch of the RTC complex to the highway.
A favourite neighbourhood for many affluent as well as middle-class people for its superior civic amenities and accessibility to the commercial establishments and other social infrastructure, the colony houses about 10,000 residents from all walks of life.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Bandaru Janardhan, who migrated to the colony about four decades ago, explained, "The layout of the colony was first sketched in 1956. Later, with the formation of a cooperative society, the colony had witnessed a dramatic change, resulting in influx of people and development activities. But it’s a very peaceful colony since its formation," said Mr. Janardhan.
When asked about the civic amenities, Mr. Janardhan informed that recently, the GVMC laid some interior roads of the colony in the run up to the International Fleet review. Further, Mr. Janardhan said that they are now planning to improve the greenery in the colony by planting more saplings.
Surrounded by Seethampeta, Lalitha Nagar and Sankar Matham Road, the colony has been divided into eight lanes, dotted with many high-rise buildings. When visited on Sunday, a heap of trash was found strewn in one lane of the colony due to lack of a dustbin.
R. Madhu Babu, another resident of the colony, informed that many outsiders had flown into the colony in the recent years as many senior residents left for foreign shores or died. The two Ganesh temples located in the bustling thoroughfares are the main attraction of the area.
M. Srinivasa Raju, another resident, informed that many residents draw water from the borewells for their daily activities and don’t particularly depend on the water supply by the civic body.
He expressed a concern over the declining amenities with rapidly creeping apartment culture and increasing population of the city. "As the colony is located between two busy stretches, now we are experiencing increasing levels of pollution these days," he added.
