Man-elephant conflict continues in Pandalur
Ooty: The man- elephant conflict continues in Pandalur as one youth died due to an attack by an elephant on Friday night while one more was injured. The Pandalur-Gudalur belt in the Nilgiris border has become sensitive in recent times with rising incidents of man-elephant conflict.
While Shafi (19) was attacked and killed by a wild elephant on Friday night in the Cherampadi area in Pandalur, his friend Shanu, who was injured, is being treated in the hospital.
The death of Shafi (19), a college student, rocked the Pandalur-Gudalur taluks. This is the fourth such death due to man-elephant conflict in this belt in the last three weeks.
Though foresters managed to capture one stray tusker, which killed two persons in the Mangorange area in Pandalur in the first week of April, they are still making efforts to track and trace the other stray elephant, which struck in the Pandalur belt in late March.
With election process underway, the man-elephant conflict in Gudalur-Pandalur has become a cause of worry to the administration, as the irate public demand either elimination of the stray elephant or its capture.
