Udupi: Upset that the Congress party did not field Muniyal Uday Kumar Shetty as the candidate in Karkala, one of his supporters used kerosene to set himself on fire on Tuesday.
Uday Kumar Shetty was one of the contender for the Karkala seat but the Congress declared former MLA Gopal Bhandary as its candidate. This annoyed supporters of Uday who held senior Congress leader Veerappa Moily responsible for denying the ticket to their leader.
The supporters also started a "Moily Hatao Congress Bachao," campaign in Karkala constituency. The protest continued on Tuesday and a supporter of Uday, Asif tried to set himself on fire but was stopped by the others.
Uday Kumar Shetty who arrived on the scene, tried to pacify the workers. He said that the B Form has not yet been distributed adding that he was hopeful that the party would finally declare him the candidate.
