Chennai: An increase of 0.96 per cent gave the Greater Chennai Corporation a fancier pass ratio but its schools had fewer students in Class 12 this year than in 2015.
Of the 5967 Class 12 students, 5,859 wrote the final examination, down from 6,202 in 2015. As many as 5,051 cleared the exam giving the local body’s schools a pass percent of 86.21. Girl students were more successful yet again with a pass percent of 91.09 against the boys’ 78.15.
P. Swapna of Girls higher secondary school in Buddha Street secured the first rank after scoring 1166 marks. The second rank was shared by G. Bhuvaneswari (CIT Nagar) and M. Ramalakshmi (Maduvinkarai), who each scored 1157 marks. The third rank was split among the trio of S. Jothipriya (Koyambedu), C. Sanjana (Pulla Avenue Girls’) and R. Dharani (Saidapet Girls’) who all scored 1155 marks.
Speaking to media persons, commissioner Dr. B. Chandra Mohan announced that three schools - Koyambedu, Lloyds Road and Subbarayan street, had secured 100 per cent pass record.
But with just 16 students, Lloyds Road school was always likelier to secure 100 per cent pass than, for instance, the M.H. Road school, which saw 623 students take Class 12 examinations. Koyambedu (76) and Subbarayan street (92) also had double digit strength.
Chandra Mohan added that each of the three schools would receive a reward of Rs 1 lakh. The commissioner pointed out that 23 out of 32 schools had secured over 80 per cent pass but this figure includes seven schools with double digit strength. Four other schools with double digit strength secured less than 80 per cent pass record.
The school which performed the best was Bundar Garden higher secondary school, which recorded a 64.93 per cent increase in its pass ratio. This school had recorded only 12.73 per cent pass in 2015.
The Virugambakkam higher secondary school suffered the ignominy of being the worst performer as it had a 61.43 per cent pass, down from 94.44 per cent in 2015.
