Dumped muck won't cause great danger: National Green Tribunal
Hyderabad: A five-member technical committee constituted by the National Green Tribunal has found no hazardous substance in the muck excavated at the Polavaram project site, which was dumped at Moolavanka dumping yard. The technical committee was formed in response to a complaint filed by social activist Pentapati Pulla Rao, which claimed that the dumping of muck excavated from Polavaram project site at the dumping yard could threaten environment as it contains hazardous material and metals.
Following a direction from the National Green Tribunal in March, the technical committee consisting Dr S. Kerketta, Dr C Kaliyaperu-mal, Ms T. Mahima, Mr N.V. Bhaskara Rao and AP engineering-in-chief M. Venkateswara Rao had inspected the Polavaram dam site as well as the dumping yard at Moolavanka on April 30. In its inspection report submitted to the National Green Tribunal, the committee observed: “The muck being excavated from the Polavaram project site and being dumped in Moolavanka dumping yard did not contain hazardous substance and the impact due to the dumping of muck in the area may be insignificant.” The complaint could not be reached for a comment on the committee’s report.
