Mysuru: The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, which comes under the Ministry of Civil Aviations , has given the much awaited security clearance to the Airport Authority of India for the underpass below the proposed extension of the active runway at Mysuru airport, according to a press statement by Mysuru Kodagu MP, Pratap Simha.
The underpass is being built as the National Highway 212 is coming in the way of the runway’s extension, and now with the security clearance work on it can finally begin .
“The runway at the Mysuru airport, which is 1740 meters long and can accommodate 72 seater capacity ATR flights, will be extended to 2750 meters. And with this the airport can be developed to international standards and several Air bus 320 national and international flights of 180 seater capacity will be able to land here,” explained director of Mysuru airport, Manoj Kumar Singh.
Revealing that 280 acres was needed for the runway extension, he said the government had already agreed to give the land in principle and the project could take two to three years to complete once it took off.
“With this Mysuru’s economy is likely to boom and ten years from now the city could have at least 20 to 25 flights a day,” Mr Singh added. The Mysuru aiport, which is also proud of its refueling facility for flights, operated by BPCL, is clearly now on the way to claim its status as an airport which is second only to Bengaluru ‘s Kempegowda International airport in the state.
