Kabini reservoir fills up, Kodagu gets respite
Mysuru: With good rains in Wyanad in Kerala, the Kabini reservoir continues to receive good inflow following which water was released from the dam into the river leading to Tamil Nadu for the fourth day on Sunday. However, in a heart rending incident, a 58-year-old farmer who lost his crop after his paddy field was flooded with river water, reportedly attempted to end his life by jumping into the flooded paddy field. The farmer, Basavaiah, from Kupparavalli village in Nanjangud taluk, had reportedly taken a loan and had cultivated paddy in four acres of land which is now flooded with water.
A heart rending video of Basavaiah crying even as he wandered around in his field trying to end his life by drowning and questioning God on his plight, has gone viral on Whatsapp.
Local people rescued Basavaiah and tried to pacify him. On Sunday the inflow into Kabini was 10,000 cusecs and 5,000 cusecs was released into the river leading to Tamil Nadu.
The water level stood at 2,280 feet as against its capacity, 2284 feet.
Meanwhile KRS too continued to receive heavy inflow and the water level on Sunday was 100.75 feet as against its capacity of 124.80 feet.
The water level on the same day last year was 67.86 feet.
The inflow into KRS was 23,424cusecs and the outflow was 453 cusecs.
At Harangi, the water level on Sunday was 2829.73 feet as against its capacity of 2,859 feet.
Last year on the same day, it stood at 2814.20 feet. The inflow was 669 cusecs and outflow was 251 cusecs.
The rainfall in Kodagu was nominal on Sunday when the district received an average of 3.10mm of rainfall in 24 hours between Saturday and Sunday. Kodagu has recorded 1066.95 mm so far from January, while it had recorded just 465.18 mm of rain during the same period the previous year.
