Visakhapatnam: People in Andhra Pradesh will have a respite from heat waves as thunder showers have been forecast for the next five days, marking the onset of southwest monsoon.
An IMD Amaravati report said Kakinada and Narsapur towns witnessed severe heat wave conditions in Machilipatnam as also Gannavaram and Jangamaheswara Puram in Palnadu district as also Bapatla, Tuni and Vizag city.
Bapatla registered the highest temperature of 43.2 degree Celsius in the state on Sunday, followed by Kakinada 42.1°C, Machilipatnam 42°C, Jangamaheswara Puram 42°C, Ongole 41.8°C, Tuni 41.7°C, Gannavaram 41.4°C, Visakhapatnam 41.4°C, Narsapur 41.4°C, Kavali 40.9°C, Amaravati 40.8°C, Nandigama 40.6°C and Nandyal 40°C.
The temperature dropped in Visakhapatnam from 44.4 degrees to 41 degrees.
Senior scientist Karuna Sagar of IMD said the northern limit of the monsoon was passing through Ratnagiri, Koppal, Puttaparthi, Shriharikota, Malda and Forbesganj. “Conditions are favorable for further advancement of southwest monsoon over some more parts of southern peninsular India during the next two to three days,” he said.
Strong westerly winds and rainfall activity are required for the advancement of the monsoon.
“There are winds in the region but not strong enough to push them towards the remaining parts of the state. Most probably, monsoon may spread to the remaining parts of the state soon. Mercury levels in the state will dip from Wednesday and there will be no heat wave conditions,” Karuna Sagar stated.
The maximum temperature in Vizag (Waltair locality) on Sunday was 35.8 °C but the relative humidity was 70 per cent.
