Eviction drive around Muthanankulam on cards

About 271 homes that were constructed in GM Nagar near Ukkdam were brought down by the CCMC on Tuesday.

COIMBATORE: In a bid to make the city slum-free, the civic body and the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board are identifying, earmarking and clearing residential and commercial encroachments in the city.

Next in line are homes built along the Muthanankulam tank. A source familiar with the developments shared with DC that in the massive drive, about 1,400 homes will be brought down. Residents will be relocated to Thondamuthur, Malumichampatti or Keeranatham by the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board.

Initially, residents will be served a common eviction notice, following which individual notices to vacate the homes constructed along the water body will be served. An official said, "Once we clear Muthanankulam, encroachments along water bodies are cleared."

About 271 homes that were constructed in GM Nagar near Ukkdam were brought down by the CCMC on Tuesday. The homes were constructed on the Rajavaikal water channel. Alternative homes were allotted to all residents in the vicinity in Ukkadam by the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board.
