Bengaluru: Only 28 students from the state could figure among the top 1,000 in the first ever National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). According to sources, most NEET toppers are from other states. Even the CBSE/ICSE students from the state failed to secure higher ranks.
The sources in the state PU board further specified that according to the preliminary estimate, in the NEET phase I and NEET phase II, the results of which were announced on Tuesday, just 28 students from the state were able to get a place in the top 1,000. “This is irrespective of the state syllabus or CBSE/ICSE. This means most of the students from the state cannot get seats in the private medical colleges and private universities of the state,” he said.
One of the major worries expressed by the students from Pre University colleges is that if NEET is implemented and made compulsory for the admissions to the MBBS course in all the medical colleges of the country, they will be badly affected.
These students had observed that if the NEET is implemented, it would be difficult for them to compete for all-India quota seats in both government and private medical colleges, which Karnataka is known for. But NEET results have proved that even the CBSE/ICSE students from the state could not secure top ranking.
According to the data published by the Medical Council of India (MCI), Karnataka has the highest numbers of MBBS seats with 18 government-run medical colleges and the same number of private medical colleges, beside private medical universities.
