Damocles sword over SF colleges

Most have not filled 30% seats.

Thiruvananthapuram: More self-financing engineering colleges will have to close down, going by the AICTE bar on colleges with less than 30 per cent admissions for three consecutive years or more.

35 self-financing engineering colleges reported less than 30 percent admissions this year and most of them had fewer admissions for several years.

Focus Institute of Tec-hnology, Poomala, Thri-ssur, Sree Ernakula-thappan College of Engi-neering and Manag-ement, Irinjalakuda, Matha College of Tec-hnology, North Paravur, Believers Church Engi-neering College, Ranni, Axis College of Engi-neering and Technolgy, Kodakara, Thrisur and Baselios Thomas I engineering college, Kootha-ttukulam reported zero admission this year.

The AICTE announced the progressive closure policy as nearly 800 of 3,000 private BTech colleges across the country have less than 50 per cent enrolment.

The country has a total 13.56 lakh engineering seats. Most states have been increasing seats without considering the demand-supply ratio, contributing to the crisis. Since 2016, the number of engineering seats has been on the decline across the country, sources said.

About 150 colleges have shuttered voluntarily for want of students. In the State, 12 engineering colleges, part of the allotment pool last year, did not feature in this year’s admissions as they had either shut down or were placed in the no-admission category.
