Campus placements on an upward trend in Kerala
Thiruvananthapuram: Campus recruitment for the current academic year has shown an upward trend. All the top-ranked engineering colleges in the state have recorded more campus recruitments than that in the last year, Mr Sunil Thomas Thonikuzhiyil, Principal of the College of Engineering, Attingal, told Deccan Chronicle.
Mr Vinu Thomas, academic in charge of Model Engineering College, Ernakulam, said that the trend was restricted to the top colleges and new sectors like automation, Internet of Things, data analytics and machine learning.
Mr D. Biju Lal, professor placements, College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, agreed with the view. “We expected a quantum leap in the number of students getting placements. In February, a major industry player will visit the campus for mass recruitments,” Mr Lal said.
India Skills Report 2019 has also predicted a growth in the employment opportunities in software and hardware and automotive sectors. The intent for 2019 has more than doubled to 15 percent from a mere seven percent in 2017.
This has happened after a gap of two years when the industry was facing turbulence and freeze. The report suggested that the most sought-after will be design and analytics candidates.
It also predicted an increase in specialist technologies in areas like Artificial Intelligence /machine learning. The hiring volumes may not reach the scale of 2010-11 but will be better than that in the last two to three years.
After recording a high of 23 percent in 2015, it had slipped to 14 percent in 2016 and seven percent in 2017. There was a revival in 2018 when the intent rose to 10 percent.
