Thiruvananthapuram: Lens on illegal waste collection

The civic body has decided to provide registration for waste collectors who approach the office.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Close on the heels of an order prohibiting illegal waste collection by the district administration, the City Corporation has formed special squads to book unauthorised sanitation crews hauling waste from households. The civic body has decided to provide registration for waste collectors who approach the office.

The civic authorities sought the intervention of the collector to issue an order to take total control of the waste management in the state capital. Currently, these sanitation crews are collecting huge sums from residents for moving waste from premises.

The district administration has invoked Section 133 of the CrPC to prohibit dumping of garbage in drains, canals and other water bodies which poses threat to the public. Health standing committee chairman K. Sreekumar said the civic body will provide registration to authorise sanitation crews.

“We want all of them to support our decentralised waste management initiative. Currently, they are dumping waste in drains, canals, water bodies and public spaces. This cannot go on and violators will be prosecuted under CrPC section 133. Non-bailable cases will be registered against the violators,” said Mr Sreekumar.

He said the civic body has a 24-hour squad to check violation. “We also have individual squads at all 25 health circles in the corporation's jurisdiction.
Police will be called if needed,” Mr Sreekumar added.
