Wheelchair accessible' option on Google Maps
Hyderabad: Google Maps has added a new feature which helps wheelchair users decide which routes to take while using public transport for their commute.
“To make public transit work for everyone, we’re introducing ‘wheelchair accessible’ routes to make getting around easier for those with mobility needs.
We built this feature to make life easier for people who use wheelchairs, but accessible routes are also helpful if you’re on crutches or pushing a stroller,” said Google in a statement.
While using Google Maps, you can feed in your destination, and ask for directions via public transport. Now, you can also opt to view wheelchair accessible routes from the options menu in the routes section.
“When you select this option, Google Maps will show you a list of routes that take mobility needs into consideration,” said Google. These include bus as well as metro train routes.
However, while recommending routes, the data may sometimes be incomplete. In such cases, the message that is displayed reads, “These results may be incomplete – not all public transport agencies in this area have provided their information.”
Google is reportedly working with the public transport departments. It said, “We're looking forward to working with additional transit agencies in the coming months to bring more wheelchair accessible routes to Google Maps. With the help of transit agencies around the globe and people who contribute local knowledge, we’re making progress toward a more accessible world for everyone.”
