Road connectivity not restored: 45 year-old missing in flood waters; prices of essential commodities shoot up

KAKINADA: The flood situation slightly eased on Monday but many flood-affected villages remained cut off. Fears are that the flood situation might turn worse on Tuesday.

The road connectivity has not been restored at most places. The prices of vegetables, milk and other essentials have shot up in the affected areas as the commercial crops and vegetables have been destroyed massively by the floods.

In Lanka villages in Konaseema, the people were facing major hardships. The officials took food packets and other commodities to them by boats. Helicopters were also pressed into service to supply essentials to some remote areas.

A 45-year-old Badugu Vijayakumar alias Yesu of Baduguvani Lanka village in Alamuru mandal of Konseema was missing in floods. He was on his way to his village from Chemudulanka, but his boat could go only a distance ahead. He then took to swimming, and ended up drowning. The officials have launched a search for them.

Officials of Alluri Sitarama Raju and Eluru districts supplied food packets to some of the flood victims by helicopters. Yet, many flood victims could not get the food packets or essential commodities so far.

Officials said the flood was likely to turn worse on Tuesday. Special officers were closely monitoring the situation. ASR district special officer Karthikeya Misra said road connectivity has not been restored yet due to heavy floods in various villages. Boats have been staying at Chinturu and carrying food packets for some distance. Later, they were shifted into the launches to take the commodities to the flood- victims. For the past four days, food was supplied to the victims of six villages.

Flood waters receded below the 50-feet mark at Bhadrachalam. Road connectivity could not be restored yet.

Eluru special collector Bhaskar asked officials to speed up the supply of commodities to the flood victims as the flood situation was likely to worsen on Tuesday.

Konaseema district special officer Muralidhar said volunteers would monitor the embankments for every two kilometres and all steps have been taken for strengthening these.

East Godavari officials rescued 34 cows and cattle from the flood waters and took them to the Kotilingala ghat in Rajamahendravaram. All the ghats have been closed and nobody would be allowed into the ghats.
