Guest Column: Let’s file petitions, demand accountability from Bescom
It’s time the public, which also includes industries and factory owners, should file petitions against the erratic power cuts. Bescom must be made answerable for its services – only then can we find the root cause of the problem and find ways to fix it. If nobody raises their voice, the power cuts will continue.
A new rule should be brought in, penalising the officials concerned for every power cut caused by system failures. Unpredictable incidents like trees falling on power lines, or trouble during rain need not result in penalties but even these problems should be set right instantly, not the next day. Only strict and stern rules will help bring about discipline in functioning. Otherwise, we have to accept the fact that we have power cuts and move on.
These power cuts, which take place every day, show how Bescom functions – it is difficult to understand how these things can happen on a daily basis and any way, it is a question Bescom must answer. If one consumer files a petition before the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission, numerous others will come forward and the matter will be taken seriously. That should wake up the department and the officials concerned.
The High Court must intervene also and ensure that strict measures are implemented. There should also be efficient people and experts from the field of energy and supply, who are roped in to bring better measures in place and help avoid power disruptions.
