Hyderabad: 15 km of roads to be dug up for CCTV grid

L&T project to take three years; road-cutting in phases.

Hyderabad: Construction major L&T has sought permission from the GHMC to dig up 15.7 km of roads across 776 main city junctions to lay a city-wide CCTV surveillance system. Though this means more bad roads for commuters, GHMC’s engineering department officials say permissions cannot be denied as the works are in public interest. They, however, will set a deadline for L&T to complete the works and relay the roads.

The cameras contract was given to L&T by Hyderabad Police. A source said, “Over 10,000 cameras will be fixed across Greater Hyderabad that includes the core city areas, Cyberabad and Rachakonda. The state has also approved a 20-storey Central Command and Control System center at Banjara Hills road number 12. Regarding the road cutting, all major junctions will not be cut at once, the work will be carried out in a phased manner. A time-frame of around three years has been set.” The source added, “Each of the four sides of a junction will have a pole with four cameras facing the four directions. Road-cutting in the core area will be completed before Cyberabad and Hyderabad.” Officials of the GHMC engineering wing said that the white-topped roads at Banjara Hills road number 10, Sindhi Colony and Habsiguda would not be dug up.
