Indian Union Muslim League seeks Rs 50,000 salary for Imams

AP Wakf Board is the top revenue earning organisation as it has a huge chunk of land and assets.

Guntur: The Indian Union Muslim League, AP, demanded Rs 50,000 salary per month to Imams and Mouzzans of mosques.

The IUMLAP leaders said there was no other income source to the Imams and Mouzzans, except the salary and so the government should treat them as state staff for serving the society.

Addressing mediapersons here on Wednesday, IUMLAP state president Basheer Ahmed said that AP Wakf Board is the top revenue earning organisation as it has a huge chunk of land and assets after the railways and other government departments. “But the Wakf Board never tried to help the priests of mosques,” he lamented.

He said that Imams and Mouzzans were full time religious servants and so struggling to feed their families with the nominal income of Rs 5,000 per month.

He demanded that health scheme, insurance and pension facility should also be extended to Imams and Mouzzans, apart from the Rs 50,000 salary per month.

IMULAP state secretary Arif Hussain and other leaders said they would stage a dharna at the Collectorate on October 21 seeking government salaries to Imams.
