Baby born on moving express

The other women in Ms Rekha Sonkar compartment helped her with the delivery, and a baby girl was born at 6 am.

Guntur: A woman hailing from Uttar Pradesh delivered a baby girl on board the Rapti Sagar Superfast Express early on Wednesday.

According to reports, Ms Rekha Sonkar, 26, of Chakjiyan of Mau district, near Gorakhpur, was on her way home. She went into labour after the train passed Chirala railway station.

The other women in her compartment helped her with the delivery, and a baby girl was born at 6 am.

Ms Sonkar was bleeding and the train ticket examiner alerted officials who got the train stopped at Tenali, where it does not have a scheduled halt.

The railway staff shifted Ms Sonkar and the baby to the Tenali government hospital.

Ms Sonkar, who works in Thiruvananathapuram along with her husband Dilip, said that her mother Sunitha had been hospitalised with a heart problem and she was travelling to see her. Ms Sonkar was accompanied by her brother-in-law.

At the hospital, resident medical officer Dr D. Ravi said Ms Sonkar was undergoing treatment for bleeding. He said she would have to remain there for two more days.

District Coordinator of Hospital Services Dr Ch Prasanna Kumar said that he was monitoring the treatment. He said that arrangements would be made for her to go to her native place after the completion of her treatment.
