Vijayawada: The ministry of civil aviation has again started looking at developing Nagarjunasagar airport, which was built on 90 acres of land in the 1960s.
Following the announcement regarding developing mini-airports across the country, officials of civil aviation ministry and Airports Authority of India have started visiting the Nagarjunasagar airport.
The state government had announced earlier that both Nagarjunasagar and Donakonda airports would be developed as greenfield ventures. The Nagarjunasagar airport was given to a flight training institute by the Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy government in 2007. The lease was cancelled as the institute could not provide training to the pilots.
Going by the impression that pilgrims from across the globe would visit famous Buddhist centres like Anupu and Nagarjunakonda, the government was contemplating to develop the airport but the plans did not materialise. Now, the AAI has begun inquiries about land availability at Nagarjunasagar.
