Bengaluru: Bins are here, will you segregate now?

The blue bin is for dry waste, the green one is for wet waste.

BENGALURU: In a move that is long overdue to prevent littering of public places and footpaths, the BBMP has finally installed a twin garbage bin facility that will help road users and residents segregate garbage at source, and place wet and dry waste in separate bins.

Bangalore development minister K G George who inaugurated the project at Gandhinagar on Monday said that the plan to bring back the efficient bin system was to prevent black spots especially in crowded areas.

On Monday, the twin bins - one blue and other green - were installed in 2,232 spots in the market, commercial, shopping areas, slums, arterial and sub-arterial roads and other crowded places. The blue bin is for dry waste, the green one is for wet waste.

Ever since the civic body had adopted a 'no-bin policy', all the dustbins, in every corner of the city were removed and collection from door to door was encouraged. The plan however was a complete disaster as the garbage piled up and the pourakarmikas were completely unequal to the task of clearing the un-segregated garbage that was dumped in front of homes and on the streets. The BBMP now plans to install two twin bins per street with the goal being to have garbage free streets in Bengaluru city.

Saying that the plan of introducing twin litter bins was to collect and scientifically dispose litter generated from pedestrians at commercial areas, BBMP Commissioner Mr Manjunath Prasad also said that "A sum of Rs 415.66 lakhs has been allocated for the purchase and installment of twin litter bins in locations covering all zones of BBMP areas. This has been done under the Chief Minister’s special infrastructure Government of Karnataka grant for the year 2016-17 and 2017-18."

  • A sum of Rs 415.66 lakhs has been allocated for the purchase and installment of twin litter bins in all zones that come under the purview of the BBMP
  • Purchase cost per twin bin is Rs 15,423 under DGS&D rates. The installation of each twin bin is being done through KRIDL at a cost Rs 3200
  • Before 2000, cement bins were placed all across the city including residential areas and became the point of attack for, stray dogs, cats, mice and cows
  • But now BBMP has re-introduced bins, but this time only at crowded places. They are made of plastic and have a lid and an opening for the garbage to be put in.
  • Each bin will have a capacity of 200 litres and will be slightly elevated from ground. Segregated waste can be tilted and disposed by the primary collection vehicles
