HC questions TS government on Third Gender reservations
Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court directed the state government to inform it by Tuesday as to whether it was implementing the third gender reservations in education and employment, as per the judgment of the Supreme Court in ‘National Legal Services Authority v. Union of India’.
The Supreme Court had directed the Centre and state governments to take steps to treat the third gender as socially and educationally backward classes and extend reservations. The apex court had said that members of the transgender community were required to be treated as the third gender.
On Monday, a division bench headed by Chief Justice Ujjal Bhuyan questioned the government while dealing a petition filed by Ruth John Paul, belonging to the third gender, seeking reservation in NEET admissions.
The National Medical Council informed the court that the petitioner belonged to the SC community and had availed reservation.
The petitioner’s counsel said the petitioner was clubbed with female candidates despite the Supreme Court verdict.
