Snapped Live Wire Kills Man; Rain Fury Hits Telangana

HYDERABAD: A 52-year-old man was electrocuted to death upon coming in contact with a live wire, while trying to save children playing near an electric pole in Sulaimanagar of Attapur, during a spell of heavy rain late on Tuesday evening.

The police identified the victim as Shaik Khadeer and said the incident took place when he rushed towards the children with a stick to direct them away from the pole.

Khadeer, who knew that a live wire was loose, tried to move the wire using the stick during the heavy rain but came in contact with the live wire and fell unconscious. After the kids raised the alarm, Khadeer was rushed to a private hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

The police registered a case of death due to negligence and started a probe after shifting the victim’s body to the Osmania General Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

As of Wednesday night, the state logged a 30-hour spell of incessant rainfall with rare pauses, bringing the entire state under what IMD termed was a “vigorous southwest monsoon over the state of Telangana.”

The rains were mostly moderate in the state, as logged in Hyderabad, Jagtial, Jangaon, Kamareddy, Karimnagar, Mahbubabad, Medak, Medchal Malkajgiri, Nizamabad, Peddapally, Rajanna Sircilla, Rangareddy, Sangareddy, Suryapet, Vikarabad, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Yadadri Bhuvangiri, Wanaparthy, Jogulamba Gadwal, Narayanpet and Jayashankar Bhupalapally, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Three districts, namely Siddipet, Jangaon and Kamareddy, recorded heavy rainfall in the state on the day, with Kamareddy recording the highest rainfall, at 106.5 mm, followed by Jangaon, at 102.8 mm, and Siddipet, at 96.8 mm, according to the Telangana State Development and Planning Society records.

In the GHMC limits, the highest rainfall was recorded at Shaikpet, at 28.5 mm, followed by Golconda, at 22.3 mm, and Serilingampally, at 21 mm.

The IMD said that light to moderate rains or thundershowers will continue statewide for the next six to seven days due to multiple cyclonic circulations in the Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of the northern Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha region. They said it is extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level, tilting southward, which will cause a low-pressure area in the next 24 hours and another cyclonic circulation over Chhattisgarh continued to persist and extended 1.5 km above mean sea level. In addition, the shear zone was presently running along latitude 20 degree north between 3.1 and 7.6 km above mean sea level, tilting southwards with height.

A yellow alert was issued for the next two days for the districts of Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Jagtial, Rajanna Sircilla, Karimnagar, Peddapally and Jayashankar Bhupalapally, with heavy rainfall predicted.

An orange alert, for heavy to very heavy rains, was issued for Siddipet, Sangareddy, Medak and Kamareddy.

For the next 48 hours, the city will have a generally cloudy sky and continue to experience light to moderate intermittent rains, interspersed with intense spells.

The mercury is also predicted to dip, with maximum and minimum temperatures likely to be around 27 degrees Celsius (°C) and 22°C, with westerly surface winds at a speed of around 10 kmph and an increased humidity level of 93 per cent.
