Thousands throng state highway to bid goodbye to Chandy

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thousands line up on the MC Road, Kerala's arterial State Highway to pay homage to former Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy's as the vehicle carrying his mortal waded through throngs of people enroute his native place Kottayam.

The vehicle carrying the mortal remains took over 11 hours to reach Kottarakkara town which is nearly 60 km from Thiruvananthapuram. Massive crowds gathered on either side of the state highway and main junctions along the route to have a glimpse of their dear leader.

Everyone had a story to tell about the human side of Chandy , how he touched their lives. The flower bedecked KSRTC AC low floor bus vehicle carrying mortal remains of the former chief minister began its journey from Chandy’s Thiruvananthpauram residence “Puthupally House” at 7.30 am.

Going by the crowds that are swelling every passing moment, it appears all plans leading up to the funeral in Kottayam on Thursday are likely to get derailed. People braving intermittent rains and hot sun during the day, waited for several hours at various junctions to pay tributes to their leader.

The procession passed through four districts; Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, and Kottayam. Scores of people from other districts including Idukki, Alappuzha, Kasargod, Kannur, Ernakulam, Palakkad , Thrissur, Wayanad have reached Kottayam to pay their respects to Chandy.
