Landslides wreck roads, isolate Kodagu
Mysuru/Mangaluru: Several parts of Karnataka, especially Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada districts continued to reel under the impact of heavy rains on Sunday with as many as 4,225 people rescued so far in Kodagu, while eight people have lost their lives in floods and landslides. The rescued people have been relocated to 36 relief centres thanks to the coordinated rescue operations by 1,194 specialised rescuers from various agencies.
Meanwhile, several Good Samaritans, organisations and Kodava groups from various parts of the state, especially from Bengaluru, are collecting relief material like food, drinking water and medicines and dispatching them to the flood-hit areas in Kodagu. The district recorded an average of 19.6 mm of rain during 24 hours between Saturday and Sunday. As per the assessment so far, 845 houses have collapsed and 773 houses and 278 government buildings are partially damaged.
There were also reports of flooding and landslides in the coast and Malnad region, which have affected road connectivity. A massive landslide at Jodupala, a village, about 13 km from Madikeri, left at least two people dead, while over 300 people were shifted to temporary shelters in Sullia taluk of Dakshina Kannada district.
Power supply was disrupted with 3,800 electric poles, conductors and transformers damaged and 123 km of roads and 58 culverts/ bridges too in urgent need of repairs. Due to landslides, all major roads connecting Kodagu remained blocked, including those between Kushalnagar and Madikeri, Madikeri and Hassan and those connecting Bhagamandala, Napoklu and Ayyageri with other places.
