AI cams soon to nab rule violators
Kochi: The Kerala Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) is set to launch new cameras with Artificial Intellig-ence (AI) to detect traffic offences. According to Joint Transport Comm-issioner Rajeev Puthalath, MVD’s 14 enforcement vehicles fitted with AI equipped cameras will be on the roads in December.
“This is part of reducing the manual checking. The vehicles which commit the offence – such as riding two-wheeler without helmet, passenger without seatbelt in four-wheelers – and other violations will be detected automatically by the AI camera with ANPR (Automatic Num-ber Plate Recognition). The new software will automatically frame the charge memo immediately after the detection,” Mr Puthalath said.
Besides, a proposal has been sent to government to buy around 1400 cameras with ANPR and AI to be deployed all across the state. “After the government’s approval, cameras will be deployed within two months in each district,” a source said.
Meanwhile, in the light of helmets being made mandatory for pillion riders on two-wheelers, Mr Puthalath said that the MVD vehicle checks will be intensified soon. “Regular checks will be conducted and the pillion riders will be advised to wear helmet,” he said.
