Hyderabadis play it safe this New Year
Hyderabad: Hyderabadis are looking for the best party spots and resorts to usher in the New Year. Resorts and house parties seem to be the most popular options this year as they allow party goers to eat, drink and be merry without tangling with the cops. Holiday resorts are offering special packages to attract New Year’s Eve revellers.
The traffic police will still have its work cut out for it on the 31st and will deploy 100 teams to conduct drunken driving checks and prevent speeding. These teams will be deployed from 9 pm on December 31 to 6 am on January 1. Last year, around 1,500 drunk drivers were caught. Main roads and flyovers will be closed from the evening of December 31.
DCP Traffic A.V. Ranganath said, “This year many events are being planned on the outskirts of the city and people are more interested in spending their new year either in resorts or house parties.” He said the 100 police teams will cover the entire city. “Last year we booked around 1,500 cases, and around 700 to 800 people were imprisoned.”
He said an advisory of the roads and flyovers that will be closed will be issued in a few days. He warned that people who try to escape or hoodwink the police during checking won’t get away with it as “our teams will keep a strict vigil to avoid any nuisances and fatal road accidents in the city.”
Pruthvi Ramesh, a working professional, who is looking for a place on the city’s outskirts for New Year party, said “indoor parties are safer for women and we also avoid drunk-drive checks. In house parties we have personal space. In organised events, although food and booze is provided, it is so crowded one can hardly make use of it. I find a lot of events to be quite superficial and we cannot have a nice chat with friends and family at such events.”
