Hyderabad: Girl, 12, suffers stroke after fever
Hyderabad: Stroke among young children is rarely heard of but does happen. The city recently recorded the case of a 12-year-old girl from the city who suffered loss of sensation in her hands and twitching of mouth for two days.
The third day, she could not walk. Scared, parents took her to a paediatrician who realised that the child was suffering from a stroke. A paediatrician neurologist was consulted and it was found that the child had already suffered mild strokes and required immediate intervention.
Her right hand lost sensation and jaw and face twitched to one side from time to time. The doctors undertook a battery of tests to check on her heart, brain and the nervous system. All tests were negative. Everything was normal. Medical history showed that child had suffered from viral fever a few days ago. The child had undergone treatment and recovered. Dr K. Suman, treating paediatrician and neurologist, explained, “The stroke could be due to the inflammation of blood vessels due to post-viral fatigue. It could be that antibodies have resulted in inflammation in the body due to which there is contraction of the blood vessels. There was a contrast visible in the artery in the neck region. This was the visible evidence of stroke.”
