Hyderabad: Parents take the rap for minor drivers

The initiative was part of an awareness campaign conducted for Road Safety Week-2017.

Hyderabad: Some 300 underage two-wheeler riders, who were caught for either not having a beginner’s licence or a number plate on the vehicle, were counselled at the Traffic Training Institute Begumpet and Goshamahal, on Friday.

The initiative was part of an awareness campaign conducted for Road Safety Week-2017. The offenders were educated about using proper number plates and the dangers of minors driving. The minors were accompanied by their parents. The gathering was addressed by Traffic DCP L.S. Chowhan. Traffic instructor, Begumpet Traffic Training Institute, Shyamsunder Reddy blamed parents.

“It is the parents’ mistake as they are not monitoring their children and are giving them vehicles at a very young age. Parents should not give them vehicles before they turn 18,” he said.

Ms Veena Shalini, 45, who came with her daughter, agreed. “We were lazy about renewing our daughter’s 50cc licence even when we had enough time to renew it. I agree that it’s totally our mistake that we allowed our daughter to drive without a beginner’s licence,” she said.

The counselling seemed to make an impression on Tarun Sai, 17, who was accompanied by his uncle. “The first thing I will be doing is to apply for a beginner’s licence,” he said.
