Pondicherry university students demonstrate on campus
Puducherry: Pondicherry university witnessed massive protests till late on Friday night after a series of incidents were reported on the campus. Outsiders tried to torture girl students, tease them and one of the students was molested, it was alleged.
The protest led by the students council highlighted the main demand for tightening security inside the campus and removal of the chief warden for girls who was allegedly not ready to listen to complaints.
It was alleged that four people in two bikes were seen roaming around the campus from Friday morning. They were following girls and teasing them . One of the girl students, on condition of anonymity, said “ There were two of them in a bike following me, they were introducing themselves as students of the university, but I am sure they are not. When I asked them to have some manners, they made comments on me and continued to follow me asking my phone number.”
“We feel really insecure to travel inside the campus as such incidents are increasing, especially at night,” said another girl student.
In another incident, a girl student was allegedly molested and physically harassed when she was walking towards her hostel around 8 p.m.
This led to immediate protests by students inside the campus. Students who were protesting for more than four hours in front of the girls’ mess were demanding strict action to prevent unregulated entry of outsiders to the campus.
“This is not a single incident, but such incidents are happening inside the university on a daily basis. Students are afraid to complain because they are well aware of what happened to girl students who complained against ragging inside the university two years back. The university was victimising two girls instead of protecting them”, said Athira, a Ph.D scholar of the university.
