PUDUKKOTTAI: Tension prevailed for almost the whole day on Tuesday as members of various political parties agitated in protest against miscreants vandalising a statue of rationalist leader Periyar past midnight on Monday at Vidhuthi village near Alangudi in Pudukkottai district on Tuesday.
Police said the statue was located on the banks of a water tank and some villagers passing through the area noticed the head of the statue had been removed, while its hands were also damaged. The severed head of the statue was found dumped nearby.
